E3 2011 - My highlights

So E3 is over for another year, and I can safely say that my wallet will be emptied once again. I say the same thing every time, but yet again there are more games than ever to snatch away my shelf space, but most importantly my time.

In a trend that continues to play out, the second half of the year seems to be filled to the brim with a large range of titles that I can't wait to get hold of. Personally, as most of my friends would tell you, the biggest announcement for me is the celebration that is Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary. Halo: CE was one of the defining games in creating the gamer I have become, and with the opportunity to replay one of the greatest campaigns ever created, online with my mates, is almost too good to be true. When I hop into a Warthog for the first time, it's going to be like greeting an old friend, and don't get me started on Blood Gulch.

Who can ignore the elephant in the room that is Halo 4. Wow, a big surprise for me, it's just a shame it was leaked before the conference. I have faith in 343i, unlike a number of sceptics, partly down to many employees being ex-Bungie and also due the success of the innovative Halo: Waypoint. With Frank O'Connor leading the helm, hopefully a detailed and engaging campaign will reward loyal fans for sticking with Halo for the last decade (it's gone so quick I know), combined will the multiplayer we've grown to love. I'm too engaged in the universe to not love what they create, even if it does feel as though Microsoft are milking the franchise a little.

E3 was not just about Halo for me though. The game I really didn’t expect was FarCry 3 from Ubisoft's conference (the best one of the show imo). I believe the second game was highly underrated, despite its bugs and other issues. The open world African setting filled with wildlife and the best fire effects in a game, still to this day, was a place I loved exploring and killing . So the new game's return to a luscious island with seemingly great characters (insanity anyone?), and a gritty story are right up my street. Another game that's peeked my interest is the pornographic Tomb Raider, which forced me to turn my speakers down after strange looks from family members. Seriously though, it looks pretty sweet, and it's nice to have a female character that isn't overly sexualised to sell copies.

Other highlights included the badass Assassin's Creed: Revelations trailer, with a brilliant soundtrack, and a 50 year old Ezio. Uncharted 3 looks exceptional once again on the PS3 and makes me wish for one rather badly; one day I suppose. The WiiU made me laugh at Nintendo's confusing press briefing, combined with the predicted £100($150) controller, and the PSVita made me see the future of gaming almost come true. Let’s face it, one day we will have a handheld that lets us continue to play full retail games on the go, hence the new Transfarring idea Sony have created. Forza, Gears, Mass Effect and Arkham City looked great as we all knew they would, and Deus Ex confirmed my preorder. Ghost Recon has sparked a little interest in Kinect for me, but there's still no key title for me to spend the cash.

Separate section for Skyrim and Battlefield 3, what more can I say? Both epic!

From this I can reiterate that 2011 will be one of the best years yet (which has already seen Dead Space 2, Bulletstorm, L.A Noire, Portal 2, Killzone 3, Infamous 2, Homefront, Brink and Crysis 2), and that no one company won E3, we the gamer did.

Oh and Bioshock: Infinite is unfrigginbelievable!
